Scope and Content

Over four linear feet of documents, books, photographs, slides, maps, posters, museum objects, moving images, audio, newsletters and periodicals document the service of Calvin Chapman as a medical doctor during his tour-of-duty in Vietnam. The collection is divided into major sections including: personal papers, Chapman Medical Classes, General Subject Files, Humanitarian Aid in Vietnam, Medical Aid in Vietnam, Military Files, Printed Materials, and Newspaper Clippings. The bulk of the collection, including documents and separated materials, are from the Vietnam Conflict era and provide insight into the medical conditions of the Vietnamese and U.S. military personnel, as well as the role of the American solider in his efforts toward humanitarian aid to Vietnam. The collection is in good condition.

He flew over 250 combat missions and saw over 5000 patients during this time. In addition to military personnel, Dr. Chapman also voluntarily provided medical and public health services to Vietnamese citizens in villages and the leper colony. For his service in Vietnam, Colonel Chapman received the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, and eleven Air Medals.
