Scope & Content:

  • Over six linear feet of USOM documents, newspaper clippings, books, periodicals, and newsletters detail the economy and industry in Southeast Asia since the Vietnam war. Also included is material related to USARV training and refugee training abroad. These materials document Larry Flanagan's twenty-one year military career, his career with the Foreign Service, and his his service with the United States Operation Mission (USOM). Items of note in this collection are several Vietnamese language military drills, four Montagnard baskets, and USARV Pamphlet number 621-1: Noi Tieng Viet (Speak Vietnamese).

Biographical Note:

  • Larry Flanagan was born on 3 February 1925 in Snoqualmie Falls, Washington. In 1943, he was drafted in the United States Army during World War II, beginning his twenty-one year military career, which ended in 1964. He then joined the Foreign Service and served for ten years in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam Conflict, retiring in 1973. While with the Foreign Service, he was promoted from an FR-5 to an FR-3 and served as the Provincial Representative for Darlac Province, the Operations Officer at the United States Operations MIssion (USOM) Headquarters, the Senior Advisor to Binh Thuan Province, Staff Officer of the Joint Eceonomic Office in Saigon, and the Senior Economic Officer for Region II and was stationed at Ban Me Thuot, Saigon, Phan Thiet, and Nha Trang. After retirement, he returned to the United States and continued his university studies, then began a private business and has since had various business ventures in Vietnam since 1995. He is also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
