Scope & Content:

  • Military papers, photocopied articles, artifacts, photographs and 8mm film document Floyd Alexander's tour of duty in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division at Firebase Ripcord.

Biographical Note:

  • Floyd Edward Alexander volunteered for the United States Army in 1969. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Fort Hood, Texas. Within his two years of active duty with the Army he spent 11 months in Southeast Asia, where he served with B Battery, 2 Battalion (Airmobile), 319th Artillery, 101st Airborne Division and A Company, 2 Battalion, 506th Infantry Company from 1970 to 1971. While in Vietnam, his rank was Specialist 4th Class(Grade) and he served as a radio-telephone operator during combat operations in Thua Thien Province and in the A Shau Valley. While in Vietnam Alexander received the following citations: Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation, Army Meritorious Unit Citation, Bronze Star (three), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Brave Eagle Award, and Combat Gallantry Cross (Badge). Alexander was discharged as a Specialist 4th Class in 1971 and was a worker in a steel mill.
