Scope & Content:

  • Less than one linear foot of newsclippings, photocopied scrapbooks, a reunion banner, photographs, audio CDs, and newsletters document Gary Smith's service with the 981st Military Police Company in Vietnam. Most materials are in good condition and date from both the war and post-war periods.

Biographical Note:

  • Gary Smith was born in Nobelsville, Indiana in 1951. He was drafted in 1971 by the U.S. Army. While in Vietnam, Smith served with the 981st MP Company (SD) as a Sentry Dog Handler. He was held the rank of PFC and then SP4 while in Vietnam for seven months. Smith was stationed at Tuy Hoa, Lane Air Field, Cam Rahn Bay. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal. He served in the Army until discharge in 1995, ranked as a First Sergeant. He now works as a Deputy Sheriff.
