Biographical Note

Jim Brown was born in 1946 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In 1964, Brown volunteered for the United States Navy, beginning four years of active duty, which was followed by 26 years in the reserves. Beginning in September 1966, Brown was shipped to Vietnam and attached to the River Assault Squadron 9, Division 91 Armored Troop Carrier (ATC) 91-7 as an Engineer Gunner. In October 1967, Brown was then transferred to the USS Cocopa (ATF 101) until November 1968. During this time, Brown was stationed in the Mekong Delta at Vung Tau, where he lived on LST with boats moored to a pontoon until April 1967, when his unit was moved to a barracks barge in Dong Tam Boat Basin in Rung Sat Special Zone. Beginning as an EN3 (E4), Brown was promoted to an E5 during his service in Vietnam and was involved in Operation Coronado I. He received the Service and Campaign Medals, the National Defense Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Bronze Star with Combat ^D<"V^D>". Once his service in Vietnam was finished, Brown was then transferred to the USS Cocopa (ATF 101) until his transfer to Japan. He then returned to the United States in Seattle, Washington where he was released from active duty and joined the reserves. Brown retired from the Naval Reserves in 1994 and is a member of the Mobile Riverine Force Association.
