Scope & Content:

  • Description The Jackson-Desbarats Study contains information collection by University of California at Berkeley Professor Carl Jackson and Jacqueline Desbarats. The first section, General Files, contains material about genesis and final results of the project. The second section, Interviews and Completed Questionnaires, contains the finished interview data used for their studies and papers. The interview questionnaire asked for reasons the Vietnamese immigrated to the United States as well as the reasons they move within the United States of America and was broken down into the following sections: Part I: Biography. Part II: Summary of important residential moves. Part III: Life in Vietnam Part IV: Departure from Vietnam Part V: Experiences in the refugee camps Part VI: The first resettlement place in America Part VII: The second resettlement place in America Part VIII: The third resettlement place in America Part IX: Part X: The local understanding and the plans of immigration The Political riots in Vietnam How many people do you know have been executed by new government? Can you let me know why they have been executed? Part XI: Interviewer's observations Scope/Content There are 16 linear feet of material in the Jackson-Desbarats Study collection. The General Files contain 3 linear feet of material, most of which is in English. The Interviews and Completed Questionnaires contains 13 linear feet of material, most of which is in Vietnamese with some French, Korean, Chinese, English, and Cambodian. Most of the interviews were done anonymously and are not in any particular organization. A white sheet of paper separates interviews within each folder. The material is in good condition.

Biographical Note:

  • Professor Pike was born in 1925. He served as a journalist in the Army during World War II (in the Pacific Theater of Operations) and during the Korean Conflict. He earned degrees from the University of California-Berkeley and American University. He served as an FSO in Taiwan, Korea, Lebanon, and Vietnam. In 1982 he began teaching at UC-Berkeley and in 1997 moved Texas Tech University. Professor Pike housed and supported the Collection until 1982 when he moved it to Berkeley. It remained there until 1992 when Berkeley considered discontinuing its support for the Indo-China Studies Project. After being approached by Professor Pike, Dr. James Reckner, Director of the Vietnam Center at Tech, and Dr. David Murrah, Assistant Director of Libraries for the Special Collections, worked together to bring the Collection to the Archive in 1994.
