Scope and Content

Scope and Content The China Press Collection consists of five groups of materials relating to the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of the People's Republic of China. The first part, Survey China Mainland Press examines the various aspects of the newsprint media in the PRC. Current Background provides reference-type material for events and people in the PRC. Selections From Magazines examines the major PRC publications while Extracts From China Publications offers duplications of the materials above and lesser know print. Researchers should examine box 16 first for indices to these publications for the years 1960-1968. The JRPS Reports cover a variety of topics and titles are listed in the finding aid below. Most of the material is of a political or economic nature. Description There are approximately 18 linear foot of material in the China Press collection with coverage from 1958-1969 and the following breakdown: Survey China Mainland Press (10.5 linear foot) 1959-1969 Current Background (2 linear foot) 1958-1969 Selections From Magazines (2.5 linear foot) 1960-1969 Extracts From China Publications (1 linear foot) 1960-1964) JRPS Reports (2 linear foot) 1958-1961 The material has been translated to English and is general good to fair condition.

Biographical Note

Dr. Pike was born in 1925. He served as a journalist in the Army during World War II(in the Pacific Theater of Operations) and during the Korean Conflict. He earned degrees from the University of California-Berkeley and American University. He served as an FSO in Taiwan, Korea, Lebanon, and Vietnam. In 1982 he began teaching at the University of California (Berkeley) and in 1997 moved Texas Tech University. Dr. Pike housed and supported the Collection until 1982 when he moved it to Berkeley. It remained there until 1992 when Berkeley considered discontinuing its support for the Indo-China Studies Project. After being approached by Dr. Pike, Dr. James Reckner, Director of the Vietnam Center at Tech, and Dr. David Murrah, Assistant Director of Libraries for the Special Collections, worked together to bring the Collection to the Archive in 1994
