Scope & Content:

  • Approximately half a linear foot of recollections written by Thomas W. Glickman document his Southeast Asia related service with the Joint Chiefs of Staff Message Center and the United States Navy, 1963-1975.

Biographical Note:

  • Thomas W. Glickman was born in Oakland, Calif., on March 20, 1929, Capt. Glickman enlisted in the Navy in 1947 at age 17 and served his country for more than 40 years. In 1957, he attended Officer Candidate School and received his commission. He served 24 assignments throughout his career including Plans Officer and later Operations Officer for Commander River Patrol Force located at Naval Support Activity Detatchment Binh Thuy, Phong Diem Provence, in Vietnam between November 1967 and November 1968. Later, he served as commanding officer of the USS Rigel AF- 58 and USS Kilauea AE-26. Among his 27 personal awards and decorations were the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals with Combat Distinguishing Devices, and two Purple Hearts. After retiring from active duty in 1987 at the rank of Captain, Glickman began a second career as a volunteer instructor for AARP's 55 Alive program. From 1990 to 2008, he taught more than 1,000 adult students and held several leadership positions with the organization at the state, regional and national level. Glickman passed away on 3 August 2010.
