Scope & Content:

  • DVD titled War: Republic of Vietnam, 1968-1971 contains photography by James E. Markham while he was serving as an advisor to the Vietnamese Navy and was in the United States Navy Pacific Fleet's combat Camera Group, Detachment Alfa.

Biographical Note:

  • James E. Markham was born on July 8, 1938 in Fowler, Colorado. He volunteered for the United States Navy in 1956. Markham did a total of twenty years of service in the U.S. Navy. During his service in the navy, he was assigned to the Naval Advisory Group, Saigon from April 1968 to August 1968 and the Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group from July 1969 to September 1971. While in Vietnam, Markham served as an advisor to the RVN Navy and then a photographer for the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group. He held the rank of Chief Petty Officer until his retirement from the navy in 1974. During his service in Vietnam, he received numerous awards and citations including the Air Medal, Strike/Flight award. After Markham retirement from the navy he worked as a freelance photographer.
