  • Typed transcript of the diary Carl Dunaway kept while he was a Navy Corpsman serving first with the 3rd Battalion, 22nd Marines and later with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines in Vietnam, 1965-1966.

Biographical Note:

  • Carl Dunaway was born in Easton, PA, on April 4 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 1963 and became a hospital corpsman in 1964. He served a total of four years in the U.S. Navy, one of which he spent serving in Vietnam. His first duty station was a U.S. Navy hospital at Beaufort, S.C. He volunteered to go with the Marines to Vietnam in 1965, and was first assigned to the 3rd Battalion 22nd Marines, and then the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines whom he stayed with until his tour was finished. While serving in Vietnam, Dunaway was a Combat Medic. He was involved in 13 major combat operations including Operation Starlite. He was awarded a Gallantry Cross, Vietnam Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon and two Purple Hearts. Mr. Dunaway was discharged from the Navy in June of 1967, at the rank of E-4. After his military service he attended California State University in Los Angeles, where he received his Bachelor's Degree.
