Scope & Content:

  • Less than one linear foot of photographs, a handbook of Vietnamese translations, awards, and an advisor card document Darryl E. Nelson's service as an advisor to the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict. All materials date from the war era.

Biographical Note:

  • Darryl Nelson was born on November 1, 1940 and died on March 25, 2012. Nelson enlisted with the United States Army in 1966 and retired in 1985, serving in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 and from 1970 to 1972. During his first tour of duty he served as a MP with the 1st Military Police Company and was wounded on the road near Di An Base Camp by a sniper, Christmas 1966. During his second tour: 1970-71 he served with the 29th Civil Affairs Co. attached to MACV TM #15, Hoi An, as National Police Correction and Detention Advisor; 1971 attached to MACV TM #1, DaNang, he served as Advisor to the National Police In-Service Training Academy; 1971-72 attached to MACV TM #1, DaNang, he served as Advisor to the DaNang City Deputy Police Chief. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star and Vietnamese Civil Actions Medal.
