Scope & Content:

  • The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association (VHPA), is a non-profit war veterans organization filed under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service and is dedicated to enhancing and accrediting the cohesiveness, esprit de corps, and traditions of valor of rotary wing aircrews that flew in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam Era. Currently, the VHPA has a membership of over 9,400 helicopter pilots from around the world. It has a web site located at: http://www.vhpa.org. The material is divided into the following series: Unit Histories and Related Information - This series contains information on unit involvement in Vietnam, including ORLL, After Action Reports, Individual Recollection of Units, and other types of Unit History and information. It is organized by the official Order of Battle for the United States Armed Forces, a list of which immediately follows this introduction. Operations - This series contains information on operations but does not specifically mention the units involved. Command Progress Reports - This series depicts in statistical form the measurement taken of mission accomplishment against programmed mission objectives at a specific point in time and includes various non-combat components involved with the helicopter pilots. Lam Son 719 - This series contains information on Operation Lam Son 719, the January 30, 1971 to April 6, 1971 operation to disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines as well as destroy their base areas in Laos. Historical Reference Directory - This series contains copies of the VHPA Historical Reference Directory Membership Directory - This series contains copies of the VHPA Membership Directory United States Primary Helicopter School - This series contains information on the United States Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Texas. The bulk of this series is training guides and manuals used at the school to train pilots. United States Army Aviation School - This series contains information on the United States Army Aviation School at Fort Rucker, Alabama and Fort Stewart, Georgia. The bulk of this series is training guides and manuals used at the school to train pilots. Manuals - This series contains manuals generated by the United States Armed Forces. General Files - This series contains information of a general nature and is further divided by subject. VHPA Newsletter - This series contains copies of the VHPA newsletter. Other Newsletters - This series contains copies of newsletter generated by other organizations and units related to helicopter pilots whom served in Vietnam. Fact Sheets - This series contains copies of the fact sheet papers distributed during the Vietnam War. Periodicals - This series contains periodicals donated by members of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. Printed Material - This series contains articles, or parts of books, copied by members of the VHPA and is further divided by subject. Separation Sheet - This list indicates material that has been placed in other collection in order to ensure archival preservation standards. Books will be catalogued and available on the Texas Tech University Library computer catalogue (www.lib.ttu.edu). Photographs are placed in archival photograph sleeves and under the VHPA series of the Vietnam Archive Photograph Collection. Audio- and Videotapes are located in the Vietnam Archive cold storage vault and can be recalled by the number listed.
