Film or Video Does Not Play

Users of Internet Explorer versions 5, 6 or 7 for Windows 2000, XP, or Vista may experience a problem where film or video on the Vietnam Center and Archive website, including those in the Virtual Vietnam Archive, will not load and play. This problem only affects users of Internet Explorer.

This problem is due to a Windows update released by Microsoft in April 2008 which has caused a conflict with the software that runs the Virtual Vietnam Archive.

This Windows Update is listed as a High Priority Update, and may install automatically if you have Automatic Updates turned on. More information about the update can be found in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

Our software provider is aware of the situation and is working to create a fix for the problem. Until our software is patched to fix the conflict, we have two suggestions for users wishing to view film or video on our website:

  1. Use a different internet browser. There are many free browsers to choose from, and this is a partial list. The Vietnam Center and Archive does not recommend or endorse any one of these over another.
  2. Use a different media player. To change your default media player, go to your Start menu and select "Set Program Access and Defaults." Expand the section for "Custom," and under media player, select a different media player. It must be one capable of playing .wmv files.
  3. Download the file. Many of these .wmv files are very large in size, so this is recommended for users with high-speed connections only. To download the file, right-click on the icon or link and select "Save Target As" from the menu, and then save the file to your computer.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and will update this notice when our software is patched.
