Contentment in Le My: ; Le My, South Vietnam: an atmosphere of relative peace and security has returned to the village of Le My. ; For the first time in many years communist Viet Cong guerrillas will not collect their heavy "rice taxes". For the first time in many seasons, a thriving village market is open, children attend school, and there is medical help for the sick.; What brought about this change in Le My was the arrival of a battalion of United States Marines in May, 1965. The Americans are now protecting an area of about 100 square miles in which some 20,000 Vietnamese villagers live. "This was strongly-- held Viet Cong territory," explains Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel David Clement. "But today the Viet Cong do not feel at ease around here. They are not welcome." ; With the harsh Viet Cong control broken, a hopeful new atmosphere of security has taken hold in the valley. Refugees are returning to their homes.
