Item Number: VAS063695 (Record 538195)
Collection: Willis F. Marshall Collection (Counterpart Association)
Description: January 16, 1968 at the ARVN 5th Division HQ at Lam Son, RVN. The occasion was the awarding of a unit citation to the 5th Division by the ARVN III Corps Commander. On the left is Col. Robert Sonstelie, the MACV Advisory Team 70 Senior Advisor. Three distinguished American generals are in the center: Maj. Gen. John H. Hay, Jr., CG of the US 1st Infantry Division; Major Gen. F. K. Mearns, CG of the US 25th Infantry Division; and Lt. Gen. Frederick C. Weyand (facing camera), the II Field Force/III Corps Tactical Zone Commander. Lt. Gen. Weyand's strategy of shifting US forces from the Cambodian border to positions nearer to Saigon helped make the Communists's 1968 Tet Offensive a disaster for them. General Weyand became the military advisor for Henry Cabot Lodge at the Paris Peace Talks, and in 1972 he succeeded Gen. Creighton Abrams as the commander of all US Forces in Vietnam, forces whose withdrawal he then supervised. Gen. Weyand died in 2010.
