Description: First United States Combat-Troop Reduction in Vietnam ; The first U.S. combat-troop reduction in South Vietnam, 25,000 men, announced by Presidents Thieu and Nixon at their Midway Island conference in June, began with the vanguard departure of 300 U.S. Army infantrymen and 1,300 marines. The 25,000 troop redeployment will be completed by the end of August, and their mission in the republic absorbed by South Vietnamese forces. On July 8 the soldiers departed from Saigon Airport after ceremonies attended by President Nguyen Van Thieu, Vice-President Nguyen Cao Ky, American Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker, ministry and military staff chiefs. Before boarding a fleet of "Starlifter" jet transports for the United States, the homebound infantrymen were cheered by crowds of grateful Vietnamese citizens, whose representatives presented the soldiers with flower lais and souvenir gifts. Description: Vietnam Government Distributes Food to VC Victims from Reserves ; From the backs of trucks throughout the country, the Government of Vietnam is distributing food from its reserve supplies to those persons made homeless by the Viet Cong, and to the general public which is unable to purchase food from the normal outlets. The Government is selling the rice, bread, meat, milk and other foodstuffs at the prices that prevailed before the January 31, VC attack. The government is being assisted in the food distribution by volunteer relief organizations, church groups, the Boy Scouts and by private individuals. The Government of Vietnam has set up a Relief Committee, headed by Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky.

Description: Vietnamese Award for U.S. Generals--Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky presents the Republic of Viet Nam National Order, Fourth Class, to Maj. Gen. William E. DePuy. Brig. Gen. James F. Hollingsworth (right) also received the decoration. General DePuy was cited for his outstanding leadership of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division during Operation "Attleboro" in November 1966, and for his assistance to the people of Viet Nam in their struggle for freedom from communist aggression. General Hollingsworth, the assistant division commander, was cited for his personal leadership and tactical maneuvering of Vietnamese and U.S. troops "with complete disregard for his personal safety" during the same military operation.

Description: American Embassy Donates $25,0000 to Vietnam Relief; U.S. Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker presents a check for $25,000 from the Ambassador's Special Fund to President Nguyen Van Thieu as a contribution to the special relief efforts of Vietnam's National Recovery Program. The presentation was made at Independence Palace on Feb. 11 in the presence of Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky and Prime Minister Nguyen Van Loc. Ambassador Bunker called the gift "another symbol of the support of the United States for the courageous efforts of the Vietnamese people and government to repel aggression and to care for the victims of the recent Viet Cong attacks."
