The jacket is decorated with the Combat Infantry badge lapel pin and blue braided rope indicating an Infantry MOS. The right shoulder patch signifies the previous assigned unit (the 198th Light Infantry Brigade) and the left shouldr patch and epaulette pins are for the stateside armor unit to which Vail was assisnged (6th Battalion, 32nd Armor Brigade). The patches on both sleeves indicate Specialist 4th Class rank. Vail's jacket also has the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal insignia.
