(USA) Ernest J. Sylvester, originally from New Orleans, Louisiana served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps from 1963 until 1985. Ernie went to Vietnam in March 1964 and served as a Medical Evacuation Pilot with the 57th Medical Detachment (RA) at Soc Trang. After rotating back to the U.S. in November 1964 and serving at Ft. Sam Houston (TX), Ft. Polk (LA), Hunter Army Arifield (GA), and in the Republic of Korea, he went back to Vietnam in March 1968 as the Aviation Unit Commander for the 54th and 68th Medical Detachments (HA) at Chu Lai, as the S-3 and Executive Officer for the 61st Medical Evacuation Battalion at Quin Nhon, as Aviation Group Commander for the 571st, 237th, and 236th Medical Detachments (HA) at Phu Bai, and as Aviation Staff Officer and Medical Evacuation Pilot, 67th Medical Group at Da Nang. In Vietnam as a Dustoff pilot, Ernie flew 1386 hours, including a record 1007 hours in 1964 and 1965, becoming the first pilot to log over 1000 combat hours in one year. He left Vietnam in July 1971 and eventually retired as Deputy Director, OCHAMPUS, Assistant Secretary of Defense, in Auroa, Colorado, as a Colonel.
