Description:
US Navy Chief Gunner's Mate Edmund B. Canby, left, enjoys a meal with the Vietnamese aboard a River Assault Group (RAG) command boat. As an advisor to Vietnamese RAG 31, Chief Canby lives and works with his counterparts while on patrol and during special operations, even to the point of using the traditional chop sticks while eating. It is no easy trick for an American to pick up rice with Chop Sticks, but the Chief is an expert at it.

Hundreds gather at the market place in the village of Minh Duc as a Vietnamese River Assault Group 31 River patrol craft provides security by patrolling up and down the Mang Thit River. Located in Vinh Long Province, 50 miles southwest of Saigon, the village was once controlled by the Viet Cong. Double Check - Lieutenant J. A. Daniel Smith of Savannah, Ga., and Boatswain's Mate First Class Edward D. Rose of Olathe, Kan., check the coordinates on a map during an operation in South Vietnam's Mekong Delta. As U.S. Naval advisors to River Assault Group 23, based at Vinh Long on the Co Chien River, they also maintain close contact with American advisors to oether Vietnamese forces in the area. Lt.
