Scope & Content:

  • Copies of military administrative records document Alfred L. Martin's service in the United States Army from 1969 to 1974 and the 23 July 2001 issue of Sports Illustrated documents James R. (Bob) Kalsu, the only professional American athlete to be killed in the Vietnam War. Also included in the collection is a program for a Memorial Service for Kalsu, David E. Johnson, Frederick C. Raymond, and Burke Miller conducted by Battery A, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile), 11th Artillery, 101st Airborne Division and a program from a Memorial ceremony on 14 October 2000 for the men who died in the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord from 12 March to 23 July 1970.

Biographical Note:

  • Alfred Martin was born on 11 August 1948 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Martin was drafted into the United States Army in 1968. He served with Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 11th Artillery, 101st Airborne Division during his tour of duty in Vietnam from January to November 1970. He was discharged from the Army in 1970 with the rank of Sergeant. He is a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, VFW-Post 8106, and the Ripcord Association.
