The collection is divided into thirty-one series in the following order: DRV/SRV Foreign Relations, Cambodia, DRV/SRV Economy, Periodicals, DRV/SRV Armed Forces, DRV/SRV Social Movements, DRV/SRV Situationer, Refugees (Particularly Vietnam, Laos, & Cambodia), DRV/SRV Education, DRV/SRV Government/Politics, DRV/SRV Health/Medicine, DRV/SRV Legal, DRV/SRV Communications-Propaganda, Cities (Vietnam), DRV/SRV Ethnic Groups, SRV Law Enforcement, DRV/SRV Ideology, Government Documents, DRV/SRV Anniversaries, DRV/SRV General, China, DRV/SRV Emulation Movements, Vietnam History, International Committee of the Red Cross Interviews with POWs in South Vietnam-Pre 1975, SRV Reeducation, SRV/SRV Human Rights, Personal Papers, DRV/SRV Culture, DRV/SRV Public Welfare, Artifact, and Books.

The 234.15 linear feet of documents primarily consist of newspaper clippings and periodicals, covering political, social, and economical issues of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), a.k.a. North Vietnam, and later the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV), present day Vietnam, from 1929-2001, with the bulk being from the mid 1960s-1980s. The clippings deal with a large variety of topics, ranging from foreign relations, economy, armed forces, legal issues, ethnic groups, refugees, to reeducation. This time period is a very turbulent era in Vietnam's history.

Biographical Note

Professor Douglas Eugene Pike (July 27, 1924-May 13, 2002) was a veteran, journalist, diplomat, teacher, scholar, writer, and renowned leading expert on Vietnam.

Pike, born in Cass Lake, Minnesota, was raised in Minot, North Dakota. His experiences as a young man, freshly graduated from High School, serving in the Army's Signal Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War II instilled in him a lasting interest in and love of Asia. As part of the occupational force in Japan he observed the interactions between the Americans and Japanese, and there began his lifelong passion for Asia.

Once discharged from the Army, Pike combined his love for Asia and Journalism and continued serving his country as a Foreign Service Officer in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Pike studied Journalism at the University of North Dakota, earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of California-Berkeley, and earned a Master's degree in International Communications from American University. Pike served as a writer for the United Nations in Korea, edited an Army newspaper in Okinawa, and worked for an Army radio station in Tokyo.

In 1960 Pike's life became forever intertwined with Vietnam when he joined the U.S. Information Agency in Saigon as a motion pictures assistant. The contributions he could make to helping others understand Vietnam and the Vietnam War with his invaluable first hand experiences and knowledge and insights from "...being in the thick of the political and military maneuvering as American involvement in Vietnam escalated..." quickly became apparent. (Martin, 2002) The U.S. State Department sent Pike around the world to give speeches on the Vietnam War. Pike would write eight books, including, PAVN: People's Army of Vietnam, and scores of articles explaining the Vietnam War. He also contributed to twenty-four edited volumes and wrote hundreds of articles and papers on Indochina and Southeast Asia. Professor Pike's works, praised for their authoritativeness, carried "his persistent message...that the war was so complex that final judgments were necessarily elusive." (Martin, 2002) In his book, War, Peace and the Vietcong, Pike wrote that ^D<"Vietnam has become the great intellectual tragedy of our times." (Martin, 2002) Additionally, Pike founded the quarterly journal, Indochina Chronology, in 1982, to which academics and diplomats worldwide subscribed.

One memorable anecdote and one of Pike's more colorful quotes is not from a planned speech, but an impromptu debate. In 1964, while on sabbatical at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to write two books on the Viet Cong; Vietcong: The Organization and Techniques of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, and War, Peace and the Vietcong, Pike came across an antiwar-teach-in and began debating with a Harvard Dental School professor. When the Dental professor stated some misinformation on Vietnam and the Vietnam War, Pike asked him if he had ever been to Vietnam. (Martin, 2002) The Dental Professor replied that that was not necessary, to which Pike replied, "I've never been to dental school, but suppose I give you a root canal." (Martin, 2002)

Dr. James Reckner, Director and founder of the Vietnam Center and Archive, termed Pike "a living encyclopedia of the war." (Martin, 2002) Pikes' support of and contributions to the Vietnam Center and Archive continues to benefit the Vietnam Archive through the wealth of knowledge about Vietnam found in the materials he donated to the archive known simply as the Pike Collection. The Pike Collection is one of the Archive's largest and most frequently used and researched collections in its holdings. The Pike Collection is comprised of approximately seven million pages of documents that include 15,000 books, 15,000 monographs, and 3,000 slides.

The Pike Collection has not always been housed at the Vietnam Archive. After working at the Congressional Research Service and the Pentagon Professor Pike housed and supported his Collection at Berkeley from 1982-1992 until Berkeley considered discontinuing its support for the Indochina Studies Project and funds for his archival project dried up. From 1982 to 1996 Professor Pike was the director of Berkeley's Indochina Studies. Professor Pike approached Dr. Reckner and Dr. David Murrah, Assistant Director of Libraries for the Special Collections, and worked with them to donate his Collection to the Vietnam Archive in 1994. In 1997 Pike moved to Lubbock, TX and served as the Associate Director of Research at TTU's Vietnam Center until he suffered a stroke in November 2001.
