Scope and Content

There are 13.5 linear feet of material in Unit 15. The Cambodian section (10.5 linear feet) contains the most material, followed by the Thailand section (2 linear feet) and the Laos section (1 linear foot). The scope of the Cambodian section is 1947-1993; the Thailand section is 1950-1977; and, Laos section 1967-1981. The material is in good condition though some preservation copies were required for newspaper articles. Unit 15 of the Douglas Pike Collection contains material on Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand during and after the Second Indochina War. The material covers a variety of political, military, economic, social, cultural, and diplomatic topics. The Cambodia material is divided into two sections. The first part is arranged chronologically and designed to provide an overview of the country. The second section is arranged by individual subject. The Thailand section is arranged chronologically while the Laos section is divided into four general subjects: military, political, social, and economic.

Biographical Note

Professor Pike was born in 1925. He served as a journalist in the Army during World War II (in the Pacific Theater of Operations) and during the Korean Conflict. He earned degrees from the University of California-Berkeley and American University. He served as an FSO in Taiwan, Korea, Lebanon, and Vietnam. In 1982 he began teaching at UC-Berkeley and in 1997 moved Texas Tech University. Professor Pike housed and supported the Collection until 1982 when he moved it to Berkeley. It remained there until 1992 when Berkeley considered discontinuing its support for the Indo-China Studies Project. After being approached by Professor Pike, Dr. James Reckner, Director of the Vietnam Center at Tech, and Dr. David Murrah, Assistant Director of Libraries for the Special Collections, worked together to bring the Collection to the Archive in 1994.
