Scope & Content:

  • Over 20 Linear feet of photographs, audio cassettes, audio reels, video reels, VHS and videocassette tapes, periodicals, books, maps, posters, museum artifacts, oral history transcripts, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, official military records and reports, bibliographies, PSYOP guides, pamphlets, booklets, congressional hearings and committee reports, correspondence and handwritten NYU notebooks document the life of Barry Zorthian, his service as Director of JUSPAO during the Vietnam conflict from 1964-1968, his service as the Program Director for Voice of America, and his life after the war. Materials date from the 1940's through 2000's and relate to US Psychological Operations during the Vietnam Conflict, press relations with the military during and after the conflict, press relations during Operation Desert Storm and the War on Terror in Iraq, and Armenian history.

Biographical Note:

  • Barry Zorthian was born in Kutahya, Turkey in 1920. His family fled oppression from Ataturk's armies in 1922 to Istanbul, Turkey and eventually on to New Haven Connecticut. Zorthian began writing in high school for school newspapers, specializing in sports writing. After graduation from high school, Zorthian was awarded a four year Sterling Scholarship to Yale University. He began his studies in 1937 and continued writing a sports column titled "Down the Field". Zorthian studied International Relations and graduated in 1941. Zorthian then went to work at Time Magazine as a "copy boy" to begin to learn the trade of journalism. He soon became the Editor of the St. Johnsonbury, Vermont, Caledonian-Record in July 1941. When WW II began with the attack on Pearl Harbor, Zorthian enlisted in the Marine Corps and began his Military service as a Pfc Officer Candidate. He emerged from training as a 2nd Lt. and was eventually assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment in Ballarat Australia. Zorthian served in four major campaigns in the Pacific theater, the battle for Cape Gloucester, Operations at Talesea, Peleliu, and Okinawa. Zorthian was discharged in July of 1946. After his tour of duty in the Marines, Zorthian returned to New Haven and began working at the New Haven Register. He soon began working for the VOA. Zorthian served at the VOA for thirteen years, and then seven in the U.S. Foreign Service. Zorthian became the Program director for the VOA from 1956 to 1961. In 1953 Zorthian earned a Law Degree from New York University. In 1961 Zorthian took a position with the U.S. Information Agency Foreign Service in India. In 1964 Zorthian was reassigned to South Vietnam as the Country Public Affairs Officer. He soon became the chief of all public relations for JUSPAO, the Joint U.S. Public affairs Office with the rank of Minister Counselor for Information in the U.S. Embassy in Saigon. This placed Zorthian in charge of all military/media relations and all psychological warfare in Vietnam. Zorthian served in Vietnam until 7 July 1968. After several offers of positions within USIA Zorthian began work with Time Inc. in November 1968. In 1969 Zorthian was made Executive Vice President of Time Life Broadcast. After his work there Zorthian retired from Time Life in 1980. Since that time Zorthian has been a consultant in Washington D.C. specializing in Media Relations. Zorthian's awards include: A Distinguished Service Award from USIA, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Public Diplomacy from Tufts, an Honorary Law Doctorate from the Indiana Institute of Technology, the Iron Mike award for contributions to the Marine Corps from Leatherneck Magazine, the Armenian Bicentennial Commemoration Award for Excellence, the Distinguished Civilian Service Award from the Army for 25 years of service on the Civilian Public Affairs Committee at West Point, and an Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
