Description:
(USA) John R. McNown, Jr., served in the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1972. He was in South Vietnam as a First Lieutenant from July 1968 until July 1969. While in Vietnam, John served as a Platoon Leader and, on several occasions, Acting Company Commander in Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal (23rd) Infantry Division in and around Duc Pho between July and December 1968. In December, he was transferred to 11th Light Infantry Brigade Headquarters at LZ Bronco near Duc Pho and served there the remainder of his tour in the S-2 Section as Assistant Intelligence Officer (air). In this position, John flew approximately 150 visual reconnaissance missions, a large number of "Sniffer Missions," and helped coordinate assignments with the four Special Forces Camps in his unit's Area of Operations.
