Description:
As South Vietnamese and allied military units drove invading North Vietnamese out of the southern half of Hue during the recent battle for the old imperial capital of Vietnam, thousands of refugees fled from communist-controlled areas of the city. ; Hundreds of them risked sniper and machine gun fire from the communist-half north bank of the Perfume River during the battle to escape over a bridge collapsed by the North Vietnamese as they withdrew into the walled Citadel. ; Once on the south side of the river, they joined some 70,000 other refugees who turned to the government for protection instead of revolting against it as expected by the communists. ; The major offensive during the traditionally festive TET New Year period left thousands homeless. Centers complete with emergency supplies were made available in government and public buildings by the government of Vietnam.
