South Vietnamese Air Force-- Modern and Capable ; The VNAF 254 Fighter Squadron, based at Nha Trang, is one of four such Vietnam Air Force units, and is responsible for much of the increased capability and expansion of VNAF operations. It is equipped with 16 A-37 jet fighter-bomber strike aircraft. Carrying six 500-lb bombs and armed with a 7.62mm rapid fire machine gun in the nose section, the 400 knot-per-hour plane is a difficult target for Communist ground gunners. ; Thirty-two US-trained Vietnamese pilots fly the 254th's jets. They carry their deadly ordinance against Communist military targets in South Vietnam's central highlands, some of the roughest terrain in Asia. Their strike missions "soften up" targets that surface artillery cannot reach. ; The highly skilled pilots, averaging 2,000 hours of flight time, fly as many as 22 sorties each day.
