  • Steve Austin Dennis was born on February 18, 1943, in Gail, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University in 1966 and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Engineering and again in 1970 with a Masters in the same subject. While at Tech he was a member of the American Society of Agriculture Engineers Student Branch, Alpha Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, the Agricultural Council, and served in the Army ROTC. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and went to Vietnam in January of1971. He was a civil affairs officer for the 2nd Civil Affairs Company in Phu Cuong. In July, he moved to Cu Chi to serve as a forward observer for F Troop, 2nd Howitzer Battery, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, and eventually became a fire direction officer for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment for his last three months in Vietnam. During his service he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, a Bronze Starand two Overseas Bars. He returned from Vietnam in December of 1971 and left the military as a 1st lieutenant. He married Nancy Webster and has a son, Bert Patrick Dennis.
