Friends of the Vietnam Center Newsletter Wins National Award

The Friends of the Vietnam Center newsletter has been selected as the winner of The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) 2009 National Clarion Award for Most Improved Newsletter (Print). The awards ceremony will be held at AWC’s National Conference in Seattle, Washington on October 17th, 2009. Ann Curry of NBC’s Today Show is being honored at the same ceremony with the AWC’s International Matrix Award and will also be the keynote speaker. The Friends newsletter will be on display for the duration of the conference (October 15-17, 2009).

This year’s Clarion competition attracted nearly 500 entries. There were 97 categories including those for magazines, newspapers, brochures, graphic design, radio, television, advertising, etc. Winners include high-profile national publications such as BusinessWeek, Parade publications, SELF Magazine, and Newsweek just to name a few.

According to the AWC website, the Clarion awards began in 1972 and are open to both men and women as well as members and non-members of AWC. The award was named for the medieval trumpet known for its clarity and symbolizes excellence in clear, concise communications.

The Association for Women in Communications is a national organization whose mission is to champion the advancement of women across all communications disciplines by recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and positioning its members at the forefront of the evolving communications era.

The Vietnam Center and Archive 20th Anniversary Ball

The Vietnam Center and Archive celebrated it’s 20th anniversary Thursday night with a group of friends and supporters at the Frazier Alumni Pavillion on the TTU campus. Keynote speaker H. Ross Perot, Sr. spoke of the struggles of POWs and how crucial it was to preserve these stories for future generations. Lubbock Mayor Tom Martin, Texas Representative Carl Isett, and U.S. Congressman Randy Neugebauer delivered municipal, state, and national honors to founding director Dr. James Reckner. The evening included music from members of the Monterey High School Orchestra, a delicious dinner provided by TTU catering, and a silent auction. Jim Douglass of FoxTalk 950 AM served as Master of Ceremonies.

2009 Vietnam Center Conference Registration Form Now Available Online

Retirement Reception for Dr. James Reckner

Texas Tech University, the History department, and the Vietnam Center and Archive honored Dr. James Reckner with a retirement reception at the Merket Alumni Center on Friday, January 9. Dr. Reckner taught history at TTU for twenty years, and was the founding director of the Vietnam Center and Archive. Colleagues, former students, and Tech officials wished Dr. Reckner well in his retirement. He also received congratulations from U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, Interim Provost Dr. Jane Winer, Chancellor Kent Hance, and Khuc Minh Tho. In addition, the Vietnam Center and Archive and the History department gave Dr. Reckner gifts realted to his personal interest in photography, such as a telephoto lens, a digital picture frame, a tripod, and a photo printer.

Congratulations on your retirement, your twenty years of service to Texas Tech, and thank you for all you have done for the Vietnam Center and Archive, Dr. Reckner!

The 2009 Joint Conference Hosted by TTU Comparative Literature Program

The Comparative Literature Program at Texas Tech University is co-hosting this year’s joint-conference “Migration, Border, and the Nation-State.” This three-day event will take place in Lubbock from 9-11 April 2009. Conference organizers have issued a call for papers.
